Zimbali Wildlife History

Category Newsletter: Article 1

Zimbali is one of the last remaining areas of natural coastal forest in South Africa, thus a strict conservation policy was implemented within the Estate to harness the heritage of this region. Zimbali has acted as a conservancy for the re-establishment of many threatened indigenous species. Homes here have the relaxed ambience of indoor/outdoor living with all the conveniences of a world class, family oriented estate.

COASTAL SAND FOREST - The enchanting 1000-year-old coastal sand forest extends down to the Indian Ocean and beach. The Valley of the Pools overlooking the Zimbali beach is equipped with sun loungers, umbrellas and a restaurant providing refreshments and meals. The Zimbali beach is not netted and does not have a lifeguard on duty. It is a more relaxed, natural, unspoiled beach perfect for building sandcastles, reading a book, taking long walks and soaking up the sun. Other netted beaches with lifeguards are located nearby.

THE VALLEY OF FLOWERS - The name Zimbali comes from the Zulu word meaning "valley of flowers". It is lush, unspoiled and inhabited by indigenous fauna and flora, including duiker, bushbuck and vervet monkeys. Dogs and cats are not allowed in order that the indigenous animals not be disturbed. Views of the Zimbali Estate are over the beach, indigenous forest, or golf course. Located 30 minutes north of Durban on the eastern coast of South Africa, overlooking the vast Indian Ocean, Zimbali is a resort destination unlike any other.

OVER 200 SPECIES OF BIRDS - Zimbali has an ecologically rich sub-tropical forest and contains a diversity of indigenous wildlife with well over 200 species of birds. These birds can be heard  and spotted throughout the day. There are even  indigenous Crowned Eagles that reside within Zimbali. Visitors are asked not to approach too closely as Zimbali wishes them to remain wild and not become accustomed to people for their own survival. Residents often take photos of local birds found in their gardens and throughout the Estate which are published in the Zimbali monthly magazine for all to appreciate.
